Garden District

On Magazine St, where it forms the riverside extent of the Garden District, you’ll find another intriguing pack of shops. Rink – opposite Lafayette Cemetery No 1, at the corner of Prytania St and Washington Ave – houses a small group of upscale shops and a book store (Click here) and coffee shop (Click here).

Fleurty Girl T-shirts

(www.fleurtygirl.net; 3117 Magazine St; 11am-6pm Mon-Thu, 10am-7pm Fri & Sat, noon-6pm Sun) Fleurty Girl celebrates New Orleans and the city’s unofficial symbol – the fleur-de-lis – with a feminine, cheeky style. T-shirts sporting local and topical messages, often involving football, are its raison d’être. Memorable slogans include ‘Breezus is my homeboy’ and ‘Free Payton’ (after the Saints’ coach Sean Payton’s one-year suspension).

Garden District Bookshop Books

( 895-2266; www.gardendistrictbookshop.com; 2727 Prytania St; 10am-6pm Mon-Sat, until 4pm Sun) In the Rink, this indie bookstore sells travel guides, bestsellers, cookbooks, postcards and a select collection of 1st-edition works. It also stocks mostly new books about the region and hosts book signings with local authors, who have a habit of dropping in every now and then.

New Orleans Music Exchange Musical Instruments

( 891-7670; www.neworleansmusicexchange.net; 3342 Magazine St; 10:30am-6pm Mon-Sat, 1-5pm Sun) Ladies, you might just get a ‘Can I help you baby?’ when exploring this large shop, which specializes mostly in secondhand instruments. It’s the place to go for a nice used horn. There’s an entire room of brass and woodwinds, all priced fairly. But to find it, you must weave through a maze of guitars and bass amps. It also sells guitars, guitar strings and all that other stuff. But really, you ought to go for the trumpet.

Big Fisherman Seafood Seafood

( 897-9907; www.bigfishermanseafood.com; 3301 Magazine St; 10am-6pm Sat-Thu, until 6:30pm Fri) If you’re here in the spring, when it’s crawfish season, you may develop a taste for the little mudbugs. But you haven’t really had the full-on crawfish experience unless you’ve been invited to a crawfish boil in someone’s backyard. If that hasn’t happened, send some crawfish back home and invite your friends over. This busy little shop no longer ships them for you but they will box ’em up tight if you want to use a delivery company (which can cost $200!). The price fluctuates widely from season to season, so call ahead for prices. The store also sell sausages.

Funky Monkey Vintage

(www.facebook.com/FunkyMonkey NewOrleans; 3127 Magazine St; 11am-6pm Mon-Wed, 11am-7pm Thu-Sat, noon-6pm Sun) You’ll find wigs in every color at Funky Monkey, which sells vintage attire for club-hopping men and women. The tiny shop, which can get jam-packed with customers, is a funhouse of frippery. In addition to wigs, look for jeans, jewelry, tops, sunglasses, hats and boots. Annoyingly it’s turned into one of those vintage shops where the secondhand stuff is as expensive as new clothes from a big brand name, but the clothes are admittedly very hip-to-trip.

Magazine Antique Mall Antiques, Used Goods

(3017 Magazine St; 10:30am-5:30pm Mon-Sat, noon-5:30pm Sun) If Sucré is too crowded for hanging out, grab your gelato and wander down to this antique-apalooza for some fab window shopping.
